Placerville Dentures

Dentures are prosthetic devices that serve to replace missing teeth. They’ve been around since the 7th century B.C. Since then, much progress has been made in how they look and feel.
With just one appointment to Placerville Dentistry, you can find out what type of dentures will work best for you– or if you even need them at all.

Two Basic Kinds of Dentures
Complete Dentures
Now we break things down even further. Complete dentures can be either conventional or immediate. Conventional dentures are made after the teeth are removed and take eight to twelve weeks to be ready. On the other hand, Immediate dentures are inserted immediately after the teeth are extracted and rely on suction to stay in place.
Partial Dentures
As you might guess, partial dentures are for those who still have some natural teeth left in the back of their mouth. There are two kinds of partial dentures: fixed and removable. Fixed partials cannot be removed–they’re secured in place using crowns or bridges that hold them in place. Removable ones, which rely on suction to stay in a place like immediate dentures, can be taken out and rinsed before going to bed.
Dentures can last anywhere from two years to a decade or more with advances in technology and materials. That’s calculated, of course, based on care and maintenance–eating certain foods can shorten the life of your dentures.
How Will Dentures Look When I Wear Them
As you might expect, your dentures can be made to look as natural as is needed. They are usually tailor-made to match your natural shade. At Placerville Dentistry, we make sure our patients are happy with their looks.
Having said as much, dentures now come in many colors and shades–now white is no longer the only option! Just talk with us about what color will be best for you and your looks.
Why Should I Get Dentures
Now that we’re all grown up, many of our teeth will begin to show signs of wear (not to mention cavities). Dentures can replace lost or missing molars and premolars–plus the front teeth affected by gum disease or tooth decay. They can even help with your speech!
Missing teeth can also cause the jawbone to shrink, leading to a “sunken in” look. Dentures help to preserve the bone and prevent it from shrinking any further.
How Do I Take Care of My Dentures
Dentures are like false teeth–they need to be taken care of as much as your real ones. Take care to brush your gums and tongue before taking them out at night. Without the protection of your teeth, you need to be more vigilant about brushing and flossing–brushing once a day isn’t enough to prevent cavities!
Take care not to eat anything too chewy or hard that will damage your dentures. And always remember to use water when you’re cleaning them, not soap. Soap can be too harsh and will damage the plastic.
